Migraine Treatment

Migraines can be a debilitating and regular part of your life if you’re prone to getting them. Although there are many migraine medications available, BOTOX® for migraines can be an effective way to achieve relief if you suffer from chronic migraines – and can be easily paired with your other migraine medications and treatments.

What is BOTOX® for Migraines?

BOTOX® is an FDA-approved, prescription medication that comes in injectable form. Made from botulinumtoxin Type A, it works by blocking chemical movement signals in the muscles of the body. This means it can prevent muscle spasms and tension that can trigger migraines in some migraineurs. BOTOX® has been in use as a medical treatment for many decades, although it’s most well-known as a cosmetic treatment.

What patients are saying

“Dr. Howland is knowledgeable and genuinely cares. I have debilitating migraines that have recently increased drastically and his staff got me in for a rush appointment so I didn’t have to suffer until August. I have hope of getting better for the first time in years.”

“My experiences with Premier Plastic Surgery has always been excellent! Everyone from the reception, the nurses and Dr. Richard Fryer has been extremely commendable! I highly recommend Premier Plastic Surgery!”

“Dr Wornock was very knowledgeable about my questions I asked and concerned with my fears.”

Who’s a Good Candidate for BOTOX® for Migraines?

BOTOX® for migraines is most effective for patients 18 and older who suffer from chronic migraines, designated as 15 or more migraines per month. If you have fewer than 15 per month, BOTOX® may not be as effective. If you haven’t undergone treatment for migraines before, make sure to consult your regular physician about your treatment options.

What Happens During BOTOX® Treatment for Migraines?

BOTOX® treatment can be administered right in our comfortable office. To begin, your injector will discuss your needs for treatment and determine the right dosage. Then, your injector will sterilize the treatment area. BOTOX® for migraines usually involves around 30 injections in 7 specific areas around the head and neck. BOTOX® can be injected using a very fine needle, and most patients don’t need a topical anesthetic (although one can be supplied if needed). Once treatment is complete, you can return home immediately. In all, treatment can take about 20-30 minutes.

BOTOX® for Migraines Results and Recovery

BOTOX® for migraines can take up to six months to produce noticeable results, so make sure to remain patient. BOTOX® does not interact with typical migraine medications so you can continue to use them according to your regular physician’s instructions. It’s common to experience side effects like a sore neck and minor redness after treatment, but this subsides quickly. You’ll be given a detailed set of instructions by our office that includes steps like avoiding exercising, bending over, or laying down after treatment. BOTOX® typically lasts for 3-6 months, after which you can return for your next treatment session. Your injector will make sure you understand when to return to our office for your next session.
