Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is one of the fastest growing and most effective skin rejuvenation procedures performed today. One of the many reasons we offer laser skin resurfacing at Premier Plastic Surgery is because it is non-invasive, imparting a more youthful, healthier appearance without the need for surgery.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions tied to the effects of aging, including acne scars, age spots, brown spots, fine lines, large pore size, stretch marks, sun spots, and wrinkles.

There are two main types of laser skin resurfacing: fully ablative and fractional. Fully ablative resurfacing creates a uniform injury to your skin, similar to deeper chemical peels or dermabrasion. It differs, however, because it allows for greater control over the depth of injury than a chemical peel or dermabrasion, helping to deliver a very consistent result.

In fractional laser skin resurfacing, the laser creates tiny channels or holes in the deeper layers of your skin. This jumpstarts your skin’s natural wound-healing process, generating new collagen. These tiny holes leave the majority of your skin without injury which makes the healing process much faster, but requires more than one treatment to cover your whole surface area.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Like the other resurfacing methods, the laser is effective in treating wrinkles, blotchiness, or age spots, as well as scars from acne or other causes. It can be used on the entire face or specific areas. Certain other characteristics of your skin, such as its thickness, color, and texture, may influence whether you are a good candidate for laser resurfacing. Some patients may benefit from the laser’s mild tightening effect on the skin, particularly in the lower eyelid area where the skin often becomes somewhat loose as a result of aging.

You can have your skin resurfaced at almost any age. In fact, good skin care and maintenance at a young age can help your skin age better and postpone the need for more invasive surgery like brow lift and facelift. At Premier Plastic Surgery Group of Utah, we regularly treat patients in their 20s and up.

What Happens During Laser Skin Resurfacing?

To begin, you’ll be given eye shields to protect your vision. Your skin will then be cleansed and made ready for treatment – a topical anesthetic can be applied if needed. Once you’re ready, your laser technician will apply the specialized handpiece to your treatment area. Once the entire area is treated, your skin will be neutralized and made ready for the rest of your day.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Results and Recovery

We know that recovery and downtime are important to our patients. Different treatment options will yield different recovery times. We will work with you to tailor your treatment options so that you accomplish your aesthetic goals but are able to carry on your everyday life with minimal impact. You should know that all resurfacing techniques can be performed to varying depths. A more superficial treatment will require less healing time, but you may need to have the procedure repeated to achieve the same results as a deeper treatment.

Your skin will, of course, continue to age. Also, dynamic wrinkles (caused by movement of your facial muscles) will eventually reappear. Some wrinkles may reoccur sooner than others, depending on their location, type, and extent of your resurfacing treatment. Despite this, you can expect that improvements in skin quality and texture achieved by resurfacing will make your complexion appear younger and fresher for many years to come. Our team will work with you to develop a professional-grade skincare regimen to help extend and maintain your results.
