Liposuction
Even with diet and exercise, it can be difficult to lose fat in specific areas. If you want to put the finishing touches on your weight loss or are unhappy with the way your body carries fat, liposuction can help.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that can remove fatty tissue from specific areas of the body. There are a few different types of liposuction that may be better for you based on your goals. For example, laser-assisted liposuction can remove fat while also tightening loose, sagging skin. Liposuction is commonly used for body contouring on the following areas:
- Stomach
- Hips
- Thighs
- Arms
- Neck
- Back
- Chest
- Butt
- Breasts
Liposuction is commonly combined with other procedures like the neck lift, tummy tuck, or breast reduction for better results.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
Good candidates for liposuction are patients at a healthy and stable weight who want to spot reduce fat. Since weight fluctuations can impact your results, it’s best to have healthy habits in place. If you’re in the process of losing weight, your plastic surgeon can determine whether it’s the right time for liposuction or whether you should wait. Liposuction can reduce fatty tissue in the treatment area, but it won’t stop you from gaining weight in the future.
What Happens During Liposuction?
Liposuction can sometimes be performed with local anesthetic and sedation, depending on your needs. To begin, your plastic surgeon will perform a very small incision in an easily concealable area. A cannula, or a thin rod, is inserted through the incision to break up the fat with a sweeping motion. A surgical vacuum then removes the fat. Once complete, your incisions will be closed, and you’ll be fitted with a compression garment for your recovery. You can return home afterward.
Liposuction Results and Recovery
During your liposuction recovery, it’s important to wear your compression garment as much as possible. A compression garment suppresses swelling and helps the skin adhere to the new contours, and our team can help you find a properly-fitting one ahead of your surgery date. You’ll be given instructions by your plastic surgeon on bathing and sleeping, as well as taking medications to ease discomfort. Plan to limit your activity level for 1-2 weeks while you recover. It can take a few months for your final results to emerge as swelling subsides, but liposuction can produce long-term results as long as you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
