Gynecomastia Surgery
Enlarged male breasts can be very distressing in situations where it’s normal to take your shirt off. If you’ve tried getting rid of male breasts without results, gynecomastia surgery can be an effective solution.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the term for enlarged male breasts, sometimes called “man boobs.” Gynecomastia can have many different causes, including:
- Weight fluctuations
- Hormones
- Drug or alcohol use
- Medications
- Genetics
Gynecomastia is common in men undergoing puberty who then grow out of it. For some men, it doesn’t go away. Gynecomastia often doesn’t respond to diet and exercise, making it difficult to achieve results. Surgery is often the most effective way to treat gynecomastia.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?
Your plastic surgeon can help you determine whether surgery is your best option for gynecomastia treatment. It’s important to determine the underlying causes and explore other treatment options first – gynecomastia can sometimes be treated with changes like weight loss, medication adjustments, or quitting drugs or alcohol. In some cases, gynecomastia can be treated by simply letting puberty take its course.
If you opt for surgery, it’s important to be in good overall health and at a healthy and stable weight. This can help you maintain results for the long term.
What Happens During Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery can be performed one of two ways. The first uses liposuction to remove fatty tissue (if your gynecomastia is caused by stubborn fat). The other uses surgical incisions to remove breast tissue (if your gynecomastia is caused by enlarged breast tissue). Sometimes, a combination of both can be used. Your plastic surgeon will create a surgical plan during your consultation.
Gynecomastia surgery can typically be performed using a local anesthetic and sedation. Your plastic surgeon will perform the appropriate techniques before closing your incisions and fitting you with a specialized compression garment. Afterward, you can return home.
Gynecomastia Surgery Results and Recovery
You should expect to take 1-2 weeks to recover from gynecomastia surgery. During this time, you’ll need to limit your activity and wear your compression garment as much as possible. You’ll be given detailed instructions by our team regarding bathing, medications, and when to follow up. It can take several months for any residual swelling to subside and for your final results to emerge. Gynecomastia surgery can produce long-term results as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and make adjustments based on the underlying causes.
